Avoiding headaches with the onset of a cluster period

At some point in life most humans are stricken with a mild or an excruciating headache. The headache could be associated with hunger, caffeine withdrawal, illness, a hangover, weather changes, menstrual timeliness or a slew of other factors. The worst thing about headaches is probably the pain associated with them. The best thing is probably a combination of knowing why they occur so as not to go crazy thinking something terrible is about to happen while experiencing them and getting rid of them.

Indications cluster headaches are about to begin are subtle and actual onsets are rapid and sudden. Although said characteristics are unfavorable the worse thing about cluster headaches is probably the fact that as one leaves another follows. This leaving and following routine can go on for hours for days for weeks or for months. In addition, cluster periods could go into remission for years before re-imposing themselves on sufferers.

Cluster headaches tend to surprise sufferers by awakening them from nightly snoozes. For this reason, sleepers are often enjoying themselves in dreamland when cluster headaches attack. Consequently, avoiding headaches with the onset of a “cluster period” may be difficult. There are a few subtle signs suffers can look out for however. These signs include sweating excessively, sensitivity to light, discharge from the nose, a drooping or swollen eye that may redden, and a flush complexion.

Cluster headaches are most likely to occur in people under the age of thirty, those who smoke, those who consume a lot of alcohol, in males, and during certain times of the year. As far as the gender gap goes, however, more females are beginning to be diagnosed with the condition. As far as smokers and drinkers go, alcohol and nicotine they ingest escalates cluster periods because the headaches are worsened by nicotine and alcohol. As far as seasonal onset goes, many cluster headache sufferers mistake this condition for allergies.

Cluster headaches are so severe they are considered to be one hundred times worse than migraines. Attempting to alleviate clusters following an onset could involve treatment with Imitrex injections, breathing into oxygen face masks for about twenty minutes, and taking medications such as lidocaine and intranasal.

Sufferers able to determine a cluster onset is about to begin could take certain medications in advance in order to reduce some of the painfulness and lessen the headache period. In fact, it is recommended that cluster sufferers use preventive meds if their cluster time periods exceed two weeks. Some meds sufferers could try are prednisone, verapamil, lithium, and ergotamine tartrate.

Unlike “regular” headaches and migraines cluster headaches continue to baffle the medical community as to the complete rationale behind their onsets. The most sufferers can do is to recognize they may have a cluster headache condition, seek treatment, and remain aware of the subtle signs their bodies give them when flare-ups are about to begin, and utilize treatments recommended by their health care professionals.
