Heat exhaustion is a milder form of heat-related illness that can develop after several days of exposure to high temperatures and inadequate or unbalanced replacement of fluids. Those most prone to heat exhaustion are elderly people, people with high blood pressure, and people working or exercising in a hot environment.

Ahhh…the joys of the holiday eating splurge – the nibbling off the party buffet table, the “just one more bite won’t hurt” syndrome, the idea that when I’m cooking, any food consumed during preparation has no calories. All done under the endless delusion that come New Year’s Day, my jeans will still fit.

However, that was the old me. The past few years, as well as this year, I’ve decided that come hell, high water, or raspberry cheesecake, those jeans will slide on nicely in 2009. However, my holidays come complete with all the trimmings, and denying myself doesn’t work. In other words, I want to have my cake and eat it too.

A few simple tricks can help curb the holiday slurge but still allow you to enjoy special time with friends, which may or may not include some special foods.

1. Cut the alcohol. All alcohol includes empty calories which will eventually turn into sugar, which will turn into fat. If you don’t already have a headache the morning after a holiday drinking bringe, stepping on the scale may cause one.

2. Drink lots and lots of water. The fuller your stomach is from water, the less likely you are to nibble, and it will keep your system flushed.

3. Make smart food choices. Most people, even if they don’t count calories or read diet websites, know that brownies = fattening. A typical buffet table may contain high fat foods, but there will also likely to be fruit, nuts or pretzels – all better snacks than those snickerdoodles your hand is reaching for.

4. Watch your portions. Let’s face it. We love our turkey, we love mashed potatoes. However, there is no need to eat an entire leg and half the bowl. Have several bites and enjoy it. If at a buffet, take a spoonful and walk away….which leads to tip

5. Stop hanging out at the food table. Yes, it’s a great place to socialize. It’s also a great place to keep grabbing good and eating. Fill a small plate with some tasty treats, and sit far enough away that in order to get seconds, you’ll have enough time to consider the conequences.

Keep healthy snacks on hand in your own house to avoid overdoing it, and on party days, have a salad for lunch, then feel secure indulging in that manicotti.

8. Contribute. Tis the season of giving, right? If appropriate, offer to bring a food item to a social gathering. Instead of baking cookies for your office party, cut up pineapples, strawberries, mangoes and apples and arrange them on a pretty platter.

9. Keep exercising. It’s my experience that if I’m being proactive in my health, I have second thoughts about second helpings. Or maybe I just hate the idea that an hour spent sweating on the treadmill will be gone within ten minutes and five bites of cake.

10. Find a way to de-stress. Let’s face it – no matter how pretty the decor is, how much we love our families, or how excited the kids are, the holidays are stressful. Stress can often translate to overeating as a form of relaxation. Don’t give in. When the stress is mounting, take a bath, take a walk, or throw on some music and take a few deep breathes.

After all, the holidays may be filled with food, but there’s also memories to make and joys to delight in…and they only come once a year.

There are few things more embarrassing than meeting up with someone looking like you just ran a marathon with sweat seeping through your shirt. Not only does it look bad, but it stinks to high heaven too! You hope they don’t notice as you exchange greetings, but deep down you know that there is no way they could possibly miss that. Body odor is caused by bacteria decomposing sweat in the various parts of our bodies, namely the underarms. Sweat itself is made from the sweat glands, the sebaceous gland, and the apocrine glands. Depending on which gland is producing the excess sweat, there are ways minimize the effects.

Sweat emanating from the sweat gland is attributed to a higher level of activity than the body is used to, stress, and heat. This is the sweat we are all accustomed to the most. To avoid it as much as possible, try wearing loose clothing. Doing so allows for more air circulation around your body, which helps to evaporate the sweat.

Next, shower immediately after the activity which caused you to sweat. Showering kills the odor causing bacteria that can leave you smelling like road kill. Nothing leaves you feeling fresher and less self-conscious when chatting with people after a tough workout.

If you are apt to feeling a lot of stress, you are also apt to sweat more profusely than if you were calm. Therefore the best way to avoid body odor caused by stress is to learn how to relax yourself. Try doing ten repetitions of deep breathing when faced with a stressful situation. -Drink plenty of fluids to cool down your body.

Did you know your feet have more sweat glands than any other part of your body? Yep! What’s more, those feet of yours can produce more than pint of sweat in a single day! (And even more in summer.) With more than quarter a million sweat glands in each foot, your feet are the sweatiest part of your body. Add to this the fact that temperatures inside your shoes can easily rise as high as 102F, and it is no small wonder that your feet can also be the stinkiest part of your body. Pheeew!

The primary culprits in smelling up your feet are bacteria of the species micrococcus and corynebacterium. They live on our skin, and produce isovaleric acid, the compound that is responsible for that foul foot odor. The moisture of perspiration combines with the warm, dark interior of your shoes to create the perfect breeding ground for these bacteria, which promptly go forth and multiply and stink up your feet!

Here are a few tips to help you give those stinky smellies the boot this summer!

Pamper your Feet

* Practice good foot hygiene to keep bacterial levels at a minimum. Wash your feet every single day with mild, antibacterial soap and lukewarm water, and dry them thoroughly.

* Dust your feet with some cornstarch or baking soda before you wear your shoes, and between wearings.

* Soak your feet in very strong black tea for 10 minutes a day for two weeks. To make the tea, boil 2 teabags or teaspoons of black tea in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes. Add 4 cups of cool water, and soak your feet. The tannic acid found in black tea will kill the odor-causing bacteria.

Wear Clean, Adsorbent Socks

* Change your socks regularly, at least once a day

* Avoid nylon socks; opt instead for absorbent, natural fiber materials such as cotton and wool, which will absorb perspiration moisture

* Wear thick, soft socks to help draw moisture away from your feet

* If you wear white socks, bleach them each time you wash them, to kill the bacteria.

* Wear socks whenever you wear closed shoes

Smelly Feet = Smelly Shoes

* Buy more than one pair of shoes, and then change your shoes everyday. This gives each pair a chance to dry out for at least 24 hours

* Avoid buying shoes made from synthetic materials such as plastic. Choose shoes made from leather, canvas or even mesh materials which will let your feet breathe.

* Sprinkle baking soda in your shoes before you wear them

* Put a fabric softener dryer sheet in each shoe and leave it there overnight

* Fill an old sock with some baking soda or fresh kitty litter, and sew or tie a knot at the open end. Place one in each shoe, and leave overnight. Old pantyhose works just as well.

* Put your each smelly shoe in a separate Ziploc bag, (or any plastic bag) and leave them in the freezer overnight. The freezing temperatures will retard the growth of the odor-causing bacteria, and “cure” your shoes of the odor.

Caution

Persistently stinky feet may be caused by an infection, or by an inherited condition such as hyperhidrosis. They need your doctor’s professional care.

You can also search on small conversational phrases that would be things you would say about blushing, such as “blush all the time”, “anyone else a blusher” or “I’m a blusher”. By doing this, your search engine can sometimes hit on conversations in message boards and support groups that are essentially unrelated to blushing. It could be a message board about public speaking or even a parenting group.

You can also search for things that are related to blushing even if you don’t have a problem with those particular things, such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) or social anxiety.

For people you may come across out in the real world, you can keep some cards in your purse or wallet. You can use any word processing program and some blank card stock from an office supply store to create some cards at home. You may want to make the title say something like “I’m a Blusher Too.” Include your email address and some websites you’ve come across that you’ve found helpful. (Be sure to follow good safety precautions and not give your phone number or address out to people you’ve just met.) By using these cards you can connect with people quickly when the setting is appropriate.
