Sweaty Palms – A Brief Overview

Having sweaty palms is very common. Specially in today’s world where sometimes anxiety overcomes us at certain points, and we start sweating for no reason. Just think about any job interview you had in your life. If you can’t remember any occasion, consider yourself lucky, because having sweaty palms can be a lot troubling, and embarrassing.
“Sweaty palms” is also known as palmar hyperhidrosis, a medical condition characterized by excessive sweating. Hyperhidrosis can occur also at armpits or feet, and it is not a temporary condition. People with excessive sweating have had it for years, and it only becomes worse as they get older and need to interact with other people. Many people become so embarrassed just to go to a social event because they have to shake hands, and if they do go they can’t do it confidently.
So what causes sweaty palms? It is not known for sure today but doctors believe that it is linked to an over activity of the sympathetic nervous system, that controls automatic processes. Other conditions linked to sweaty palms are hyperthyroidism, menopause, obesity, and psychiatric disorders.
Sweaty palms treatment can vary depending of the degree of the condition. Severe cases are best treated by surgery. This surgery is called Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy, and in this surgical procedure, portions of the sympathetic nerve trunk are cut, or removed. Other treatments are: oral medication (Ditropan, Robinul), botulinum toxic (Botox), Aluminum chloride solutions, iontophoresis, hypnosis, meditation, and biofeedback. These other treatments are aimed to people with a low grade of sweating, for example people with sweaty palms treated by anxiety. In this case, the less intrusive methods such as hypnosis, meditation and biofeedback are by far the recommended alternatives.
If you suffer from sweaty palms, go visit your doctor. A certified physician can help you decide which way to follow to solve your problem, you don’t have to live forever with embarrassment, thanks to today’s techniques.
How To Avoid Those Nasty Summer Skin Rashes

Summer is a time to relax, enjoy yourself, maybe get a tan and forget about your everyday troubles. However, whilst it may be one of the happiest times, summer can also bring a lot of grief to your skin.
People with oily skin will find that their condition becomes worse, there is the ever present risk of developing skin cancer, and the skin can also become overly dry. However, something many people do not think about, are the many rashes which the skin can develop over the summer months.
Summer rashes can be frustrating, itchy, and sometimes hard to get rid of. So what causes them and what should we be doing prevent them from occurring in the first place?
Summer Skin Rashes
When summer finally arrives people start to take part in summer activities and unfortunately these activities increase the risk of skin rashes occurring. There are many reasons why these rashes appear, some can be caused by too much heat, whilst others can occur through exposure to insects and certain plants. Whatever the rash is caused by, it can become extremely irritating and itchy if left untreated. Some common summer skin rashes include:
Heat Rash
This is by far the most common skin rash which occurs during the summer months. It is more common in people with fair skin and you can identify it by small red blisters or large spots, appearing on the areas which have had the most sun exposure. This type of rash can be extremely itchy and it often occurs either immediately or a few hours after being exposed to the sun. The only way to really prevent this rash is to wear a high sun protection factor sunscreen at all times whilst out in the sun..
Photosensitivity Caused by Drugs
It is possible for some medications to make a person more sensitive to sun exposure. This condition is known as drug induced Photosensitivity and a rash most commonly appears with the condition. Some drugs which may cause this include the birth control pill, anti inflammatory drugs and blood pressure medicine.
Photoallergic Dermatitis
A rash appears with this condition as the sun reacts to certain chemicals which are on the skin. Cosmetics, perfumes and soap can all cause this kind of rash and even some sunscreens can contribute. Obviously if you do notice this you should stop using whichever chemical is causing the problem, if you can actually identify it that is!
Prickly Heat
This is another common rash which is caused by the sweat which the sun produces. Otherwise known as Malaria, it occurs when the sweat ducts become blocked or there is too much perspiration. They tend to break open and this allows the sweat to leak just under the skin which is what causes the rash to occur.
Rashes Caused by Plants
In summer some plants really come into bloom, and often if you come into contact with some of them, you will gain a nice little rash! Some common plants which cause these kinds of rashes include daffodils, stinging nettles, Japanese Boxwood and Ivy. So always stay away from wild plants as much as possible.
Insect Bites
Insect bites are quite common in summer as more insects are drawn to the heat. The bite can cause a nasty, itchy little rash so it is always best to protect yourself with insect repellent throughout the summer.
The best way to treat any rash is to try and not scratch it. However tempting it may be and however itchy the rash is, scratching it can cause the rash to become infected. If you do end up with an infection you may need to go to the doctors who will prescribe you antibiotics to clear it up. Generally rashes clear up on their own, though if it does persist and you start to develop a fever, it is important to contact your doctor as soon as possible.
Excessive Underarm Perspiration: Causes of Excessive Underarm Sweating and How to Cure it

Excessive underarm perspiration is a pretty embarrassing condition to have. Aside from the obvious discomfort, you still have to deal with stares of disgust and people talking behind your back. All these things take away your concentration and hinder you from being the best person you can be.
Fortunately, there are ways to deal with excessive underarm perspiration. To help you deal with sweaty armpits, read on!
Genetics
If you’re suffering from excessive underarm perspiration, it could be a hereditary issue. Check your family tree for signs of primary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). It’s a condition that makes your body’s active regions more sweaty than normal.
Hyperhidrosis usually appears during the adolescent years, although experts are not sure of its real case. For this condition, try seeking professional help for prescribed medication.
On the other hand, you must be aware of secondary hyperhidrosis as well. This is a reaction triggered by other illnesses such as diabetes, tumors, menopause, etc. This can prove to be more serious than primary hyperhidrosis, so an appointment with your doctor is in order.
Body Fat
If you have a lot of body fat, you’re more prone to excessive underarm perspiration. Body fats cause you to sweat more than usual. You should try exercising a little more to lose all that extra weight. Aside from reducing the instances of sweaty armpits, you’ll be on your way to a healthy new body as well!
Good Grooming
There are a lot of anti-perspirant brands out there in the market. If you find that a certain brand does not have any effect, try checking the amount of aluminum chloride in it. This substance is regularly used in anti-perspirant products and some have stronger aluminum chloride doses than others.
Of course, this does not solve the problem alone. Try to keep your armpits hair free. If your image does not allow for shaven underarms, wash yourself every night before you go to sleep.
Dealing with excessive underarm perspiration is not just an issue of vanity. Having such a condition can affect many aspects of your life. However, keep in mind that what matters most is what you think of yourself and how well you handle obstacles in life.
How To Recognize, Avoid And Treat Panic Attacks

A panic attack can easily turn into a terrifying medical phenomenon. Imagine that you are simply walking around your home when suddenly you are embraced by a terrible state of fear. Ranging in seriousness to a simple shortness of breath to a much more traumatic feeling that you are actually dying, anxiety covers a wide variety of symptoms that are absolutely horrifying if you ever experience them. Most incidents can last from anywhere between a few minutes to about a half hour, making them unbearably random, as just when you think it should be over, it may keep continuing.
Because so many people suffer from panic attacks each and every year, it is important to know what the symptoms are, how to avoid them and what methods the medical professionals of our world use to treat panic disorders even if you do not suffer from this malady.
Panic attacks can actually come in all shapes and sizes and can include a wide range of symptoms that you should be on the lookout for. While the amount and scope of a panic attacks symptoms can range tremendously, there are a few signs that you can easily use to help you determine if you are actually experiencing a panic attack. The most common symptoms include a rapid heart rate, accelerated breathing, sweating or chills, trembling and dizziness. Oftentimes, these symptoms can be accompanied by other, more severe signs like a tightness in your chest, trouble swallowing and a tight, clenching feeling in your throat as if you are about to die.
Unfortunately, nobody is really sure as of yet about what causes these incidents in some people. Because these attacks are so incredibly random and can simply occur out of the blue, there is really no way to pinpoint a particular cause. Although there has been some information leading people to believe that panic attacks are hereditary, many scientists and doctors do agree that panic attacks are related to overactive chemical responses in your body and can be directly associated with the amount of stress that you feel on a daily basis. A good way to avoid these attacks may be to try and avoid as much stress as possible.
Medication seems to be one of the best ways to treat panic attacks. If your attacks worsen or occur more frequently, it may not be a bad idea to pay your local doctor a visit. Many doctors will proscribe you with an anti depressant style drug to help you alleviate your feelings of stress. Also, you may be required to take an anti-stress medication as well if you feel that your panic attacks are related to high levels of stress. For people who experience frequent or severe panic attacks, regular meetings with a psychiatrist may be necessary.
Causes of hot flashes and night sweats and what to do about them – Part 1

I don’t know why they call them hot flashes. They last longer than what you’d think a flash would last. When it comes to menopause and hot flashes, I’ve been there, done that, and bought the t-shirts.
Hot flashes are more than just a feeling of being too warm. You can feel them in your ears, you can hear the “whoosh” of blood rushing through your brain, and sometimes you can perspire to the point of literally dripping – reminding me of those NBA players you see standing at the free throw line wiping the droplets of sweat from their chin or their brow.
There are as many suggested “remedies” for hot flashes as there are hot flashes a woman experiences through the menopause process.
There are some that believe that Vitamin E helps with the dilation of blood vessels. This seems to be partially true, in that it may help with MILD hot flashes – that is, if “mild” hot flashes actually exist. Experts agree that in order for vitamin E to be truly effective, it must be taken with foods that contain fat. Additionally, the standard “cheap” vitamin E that anyone can pick up at the local store, which is a synthetic form of vitamin E. These synthetic forms are less effective and, for the most part, a huge waste of money unless you want to pop the capsule and use the contents on a patch of dry skin. The form of vitamin E that proves to most effective are the “mixed tocopherols.” I busted the buck and bought the latter type and found enough relief to continue taking them, regardless of the cost.
There are some herbs that are suggested to help with the hot flashes, as well. Black cohosh, motherwort, common chickweed, elder flower and violets are among the suggested herbal supplements to thwart hot flashes. However, personally, I wouldn’t take any supplement that is not approved by the FDA or at least managed, in some part, by a responsible watchdog agency that ensres the safety of the supplement. Vitamins and herbs are considered diet supplements and, as such, are not required to have FDA approval – this is why there are so many bogus weight loss products on the market.
Avoidance of alcohol and caffeine is also one of the kindest things a woman can do to herself if she wants to avoid hot flashes.
A colleague of mine undergoes accupuncture every other week for hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms and swears by the treatment.
Finally, HRT (hormone replacement therapy) is often recommended by gynecologists as a way to treat the symptoms of menopause. However, hormone replacement has been found to cause liver disease, coronary artery disease, blood clots, endometrial cancer, migraines, breast cancer, fibroids, and gall bladder disease, to name a few.
Finally, some studies have shown that a good program of exercise and proper nutrition through the menopause process have helped some women with their hot flashes.
What is important is for every woman to research all the treatment modalities, and make an informed decision. What works for some won’t work for all and, in the end, patience and trial and error will be the best personal attributes to go with the decision-making process.
Hyperhidrosis Surgery – Is It Worth It?

If you’ve contemplated taking Hyperhidrosis surgery, chances are you have one of the more severe cases of Hyperhidrosis. I understand the feeling of helplessness when antiperspirants and various other treatments are just not enough to solve the problem. If this is the route you’re considering, you had best be well informed as the results will be permanent, good or bad. Hopefully this will provide you with some more insight if this is the path you’re considering taking.
Hyperhidrosis surgery is otherwise known as Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy or ETS for short. This process involves making an incision in your back, inserting a small camera in the incision, through your rib cages in the search for your sympathetic nerves near your underarm. These nerves are responsible for telling your sweat glands to sweat. Unfortunately if you have Hyperhidrosis, these nerves are working on overdrive and a little too trigger happy. The solution? Destroy the nerves. Yes, it is permanent, once they are destroyed, you will not be sweating much from your underarms ever again. You may be thinking this is excellent news now, but it’s not as great as it sounds.
You see, with Hyperhidrosis surgery, there is the possibility of compensatory sweating. This is excessive sweating of the back or abdomen usually in response to the destruction of the nerves near the underarm. Some people find this just as annoying as the underarm sweating and thus regert every having surgery in the first place. Granted the percent of people who experience this is small, it is worth noting as this treatment method is irreverasable.
Saving money at home: How to reduce your utility bills

It seems as though all we talk, read and think about these days is money, but unless you are a multi billionaire we could all do with a little more. The strange thing is we could have a little extra each month without having to save or take an advance from those dreadful plastic cards.
Extra money is right under your nose; by making just a few changes to your household you really could pocket the difference each and every month. No I am not going to start suggesting you run your car on water or any drastic changes, just simple tips throughout your home to help reduce those terrible utility bills.
Start with lighting; first may I please say do not in any way remove any bulbs that light any dangerous areas, safety is of the up most concern. Take a look at each room, can you reduce the number of lamps and/or the power. Make sure that all of your family understands the importance of turning lights off when they leave the room; an unoccupied lit room is costing you money.
Electrical items: Televisions, Monitors, DVDs ensure that you switch off the standby button when you have finished; anything that is consuming electricity is costing you money.
Heating: Turn down the setting a couple of degrees, tell your family they can always put an extra sweater on. If its winter and your children are wearing summer clothing, it’s costing you money.
The kitchen: the most expensive room in your house to run. Microwave: Always turn it off when not in use, keeping the power on just to run the clock is using more electricity over a year than what you save by cooking in a microwave.
Meals: Try to cook more meals at the same time, the additional meal can be frozen and reheated in the microwave. Boil vegetables together, anything you can combine, saves power.
Freezer: Keep it full, the more gaps there are, the more power it uses to run. If buying more food to fill is not an option, then stock up on bread. Also try not to open and close the door more than is needed, each time you open it warm air rushes in, which in turn raises the temperature.
Washing: Wait until you have a full load and the dryer, do not use it unless the weather is really bad.
Kettle: Only fill with enough water for your needs.
Water: Check faucets for leaks, those drips can cost a lot more than the price of a washer and start taking a shower instead of a bath.
Regularly check out other utility companies, it may be highly beneficial to you to switch one or more of your suppliers. Do not forget the phone company.
These are very simple tips, obvious you may say. However it is surprising to learn how few of us actually follow these. In time all of these ideas add up to quite a saving over the year and in our troubled life we need all the help we can get.

How to avoid smelly feet – Part 1

As a teenager I could was on numerous occasions embarrassed by smelly feet. This might not have been so bad if I had been a boy. But being a teenage girl who cheered and was a gymnast with smelly feet was a nightmare. I often had to remove my shoes to perform and at times you could see the look of horror on my fellow teammates and competitors faces as the powerful aroma overtook them.
I was always told to put on clean socks , wear clean shoes and for Gods sake wash my feet. I did all of these things but with no relief from the horrible stench of feet that whafted up in what would have been a dark green cloud had it been visible.
I tried lotions, special soaps and other over the counter remedies. These all helped the other problems that you experience as an athlete. I avoided athletes feet, bunions, calluses and a number of maladies that feet endure. My feet were by far the prettiest feet on my squad because of all of these products. That was if you could have seen through the green cloud of foot odor, to see them.
I went barefoot as often as I could to try to allow my feet to air out, wore odor eater insoles in all of my shoes, which in those days meant that pretty strappy sandles or dress shoes were not an option. The insoles did help but not enough to allow me to allow my feet to show or should I say not enough to allow me to not keep them enclosed inside tightly laced shoes.
I would see other girls in cute little flip flops or barefoot with their feet daintly propped in their boyfriends lap as he rubbed them and played with their toes. That may seem like a silly thing to notice but I was so jealous of those darn smell free feet.
Then I had a savior of a teacher that was from Germany. She told me of a remedy that cured my odoriferous deliema forever. She instructed me to make a foot bath of tea. Yes, tea. I was to make a really strong tea bath and soak my feet for 30 minutes each night. I did this nightly for 1 week. The tea dries up the sweat glands in the feet and helps to stop the odor caused by sweaty feet.
I was skeptical but after that week I have not had a problem with smelly feet again. If there is a time when I know I will be perspiring a great deal for days in a roll, I just take a relaxing tea foot soak. I still also use great foot products so that I continue to have pretty feet that I show off in strappy little sandles that I can kick off in a moment for a great foot massage. I will never to be embarrased by the aroma of smelly feet again.
Exercise to reduce stress

Exercise can reduce stress, but part of relieving that stress means finding the form of exercise that you both enjoy and will benefit from. There are many things an individual can do in the way of exercise like taking a walk or bike ride. Some may prefer something a little more active which may involve others such as playing baseball or Frisbee. Gyms are in abundance today and offer not only machines but a variety of classes such as martial arts or yoga. Others simply prefer to stay home and exercise in the privacy of their own homes utilizing exercise DVD’s or a tread mill.
Walking is a great way to exercise though it can be difficult during winter months in some places. This type of exercising can be done alone or with another individual. During this time some individuals may chose to get away from it all and put the head phones on with their favorite music. Others may just chose to use this time to think about things and enjoy their surroundings. To create more of a challenge try speed walking this is great while listening to music and will not only aid in reducing stress but burn more calories. Burn even more calories and tone up that upper body by adding some light weights. Like walking a bike ride can offer the same benefits only on wheels, however I would not suggest your favorite music unless you are in a very unpopulated area. This type of exercise not only will help to relieve stress, but allow for a great cardio workout as well.
Now if you’re the outdoor type you might prefer a game of baseball with some friends. This is a great way to not only relieve stress, but socialize with some friends as well. The down side to this type of activity is that if the weather is bad then what, well how about an indoor batting cage. While you don’t get the same excitement as you normally would outdoors, stress can still be reduced while you hit those balls. Frisbee offers the same benefits as playing a game of baseball only playing indoors is not a possibility that is known of.
A gym is a great place to relieve some stress with a variety of exercise machines and programs there is sure to be something there for everyone. The YMCA is a great place if you like the gym and the majority of them have a pool for the swimmers out there. Why not relieve some stress on the tread mill and cool off with a nice relaxing swim, after you wash the sweat off of course. One problem with a gym is scheduling, every program offered has a schedule and the program which
